"Biologists who monitor the seal population recently spotted the first pup of the season born on the beach at Point Reyes. Most pups are born in January, and initially are about 3 to 4 feet long and weigh about 60 pounds. "

Point Reyes officially entered Spanish maps on January 6, 1603 when Sebastian Vizcaino sighted the headlands on the Roman Catholic feast day of the three wise men. Following Spanish tradition, the headlands were named after these religious figures: "la Punta de los Reyes" or the Point of the Kings. (thx EP).

Following Spanish tradition, the headlands were named after these religious figures: "la Punta de los Reyes" or the Point of the Kings. Spanish expeditions along the north coast continued. Later, sailors eventually found and entered Tomales Bay, where they would have seen the Miwok village at Segogolue or Toms Point. Amongst the kotças (sleeping shelters), the Spanish traded goods made of metal for finely woven Miwok baskets." (from http://www.nps.gov/"¦/historycu"¦/people_europeanexplorers.htm)

Full moon rising! Look for it! "The January 2015 full moon is the first full moon after the December 21 solstice. In North America, we often this full moon the Wolf Moon, Old Moon or Moon After Yule. Astronomically speaking, the moon is full at the moment that it's most opposite the sun in its orbit (180 from the sun in celestial or ecliptic longitude). For general reference, however, we can say the moon is full all night tonight, lighting up the nighttime from dusk until dawn." This picture is the same moon, tonight, in Italy.

Only Golden Gate Transit buses, emergency vehicles will be allowed to cross on Jan. 10-12. Golden Gate Ferry will expand its service.

By Bay City News Service:

The Golden Gate Bridge will close later this month for the installation of a 13,340-foot moveable median barrier to provide a safer trip across the bridge and eliminate head-on collisions, bridge officials said.

The 52-hour closure starts at 12:01 a.m. Jan. 10 and ends at 4 a.m. Jan. 12.

More than 3,200 steel-clad metal and concrete barrier units are already stacked at the Golden Gate Bridge Toll Plaza administration building off of Merchant Road, Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District spokeswoman Priya David Clemens said.

The units are 12 inches wide, 32 inches high and filled with high density concrete. They will be connected in a line using steel pins to form a semi-rigid median barrier designed to stay in place through tension and their own weight. Each barrier weighs approximately 1,500 pounds, Clemens said.

In advance of the closure, blue dots are being installed on the bridge roadway, Clemens said.

The dots are guidelines for the two zipper trucks with Golden Gate Bridge logos that will move the barriers to different lanes to accommodate traffic flow.

The estimated cost of the project is $30.3 million, with $20 million from the Metropolitan Transportation Commission via the state of California, $1.3 million in federal funds and $5.1 million from Golden Gate Bridge toll revenues.

During the closure, Golden Gate Transit buses will still be allowed to cross the bridge and will run on their normal weekend schedule. Emergency vehicles also will be allowed on the bridge during the closure.

Vehicles traveling from the North Bay will have to use either the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge or Bay Bridge to get into San Francisco.

Golden Gate Ferry will expand its service to and from Larkspur and San Francisco to include late night trips.

There will be 15 departures from Larkspur to San Francisco starting at 5:45 a.m. Jan. 10 through 12:35 a.m. Jan. 11. Eleven of the departures from Larkspur to San Francisco will be half-hour high-speed runs.

There are 14 departures from San Francisco to Larkspur from 6:20 a.m. Jan. 10 through 1:10 a.m. Jan. 11. Eleven of the departures will be high-speed runs.

The Sausalito Ferry to and from San Francisco will operate on its regular weekend schedule. The trip takes a half-hour one way.

The bridge's east sidewalk will remain open to pedestrians and bicyclists, but the west sidewalk and parking lots at both ends of the bridge will be closed to the public.

San Francisco Municipal Railway 28-19th Avenue buses will be allowed to operate through the tunnel under the Bridge Toll Plaza.

Access roads that lead to the bridge will start closing at 9:30 p.m. Jan. 9.
U.S. Highway 101 in Marin County will close at the Marin City/Sausalito exit. There will be no southbound access from Marin City to the bridge and there will be no northbound access from Alexander Avenue. Access to northbound Highway 101 will be available from Spencer Avenue and Rodeo Avenue.

In San Francisco, the Highway 101 closure will be at Doyle Drive and Marina Boulevard. There also will be a closure at the intersection of Park Presidio Boulevard and Lake Street. There will be no northbound access to Highway 101 between those exits and the bridge.

Just (9 am Dec 31) had a chat with Will Thompson, who is our local CHP patrolman. He told me he had just had a discussion at the sheriff's office about the parking ticket issued to a local person at Chicken Ranch a couple of days ago. He told me they have decided to rescind the ticket and that no parking tickets should be issued at that location, where people park to go to the beach. Linda Petersen

Has anyone ever gotten a parking ticket for parking at Chicken Ranch Beach?

Yesterday I got a ticket for parking on the shoulder of Sir Francis Drake Blvd just up from the beach. This is where I have been parking for ages to meet Carlos to go take photos, and where I see 100s of cars park weekly to visit the beach.

As you can see, I am parked facing the wrong way, though I am very far off the road. This cost me $61. To add to my pain, "PARKED ON SHOULDER/FREEWAY CVC 21718" was hand written on the ticket, raising my ticket to $106. SFD is a freeway?

I TOTALLY accept my violation and respect that the officer who wrote it was simply doing his/her job. So no friction, I totally understand. I am just curious of others experiences parking on the shoulder of SFD Blvd so I know for future reference.

Merry Christmas to me...

Sounds like 'Hidden Dragon' might pale in comparison to what Ken Fulk is bringing to town: "Fulk is creating a summer compound in Inverness for philanthropists Alexis and Trevor Traina, with an old-time fishing-camp theme. "He imagines design like an Old World theater director," Alexis Traina said, "where every single detail is a rich, sensory experience that tells a piece of a great story hatched by Ken and his clients.""
