Structure fire on Nicasio Valley Rd.

From a local resident (WMF also had a coyote going through our raccoon distributed garbage in Inverness recently, which we don't see often):

"Stepped out my front door early this morning to find one of my cats squared-off against orange/orange, the colored ear-tagged young coyote that has been in and around Inverness the last few weeks. Chased him down the driveway and quite a ways up Mt Vision, showering him with all the unwelcome vibes I could muster.

I hope-but-doubt the unwelcome energy will really do much to keep him out of my yard and our neighborhood. A gentle reminder to other small pet owners to keep them (and their food bowls) close and/or inside and to be extra vigilant with keeping compost piles and garbage cans from becoming attractive nuisances. Wish the short-term rentals would do a better job in the garbage can department." (Thx TB)

PG&E crews working on power lines on SFD in Inverness. One lane. Restoration still set at 3pm.

Power went out in Inverness around 1:30am and is still out. PG&E estimated time to restoration around 3pm. No word on cause.

"When the staff and students returned to West Marin School in Point Reyes Station yesterday after the spring break time off, they discovered that 17 of the student's Chromebook laptops, along with a teacher's iPad and various other supplies had disappeared. This incident has had a major negative impact, both logistically and psychologically for the school and students. via USCGNorCal: "The Unified Command coordinated the tow of the Wan Hai 176, a 564-foot container ship, to anchorage nine in the San Francisco Bay, Sunday evening.

Due to more favorable weather conditions, the Delta Deanna, a 112-foot tug, was able to pass tow lines to the Wan Hai 176’s crew at its anchored location approximately seven miles off the coast of Point Reyes.

Once the lines and anchors were secured, the tug began towing the Wan Hai 176 with the tugs Stacey Foss, Delta Billie, Delta Deanna and Rachel Allen escorting the ship to anchorage nine in the San Francisco Bay.

The Coast Guard Captain of the Port of San Francisco has ordered the ship to remain at the anchorage until the ship’s engines have been fixed and Coast Guard personnel have conducted an inspection of the ship."

That was a close one and I'm guessing people pulled off some heroic efforts to keep that boat from drifting into Point Reyes.

Here is a what the 564 foot motor vessel WAN HAI 176, that lost motor last night, looks like from the shores of Point Reyes. It’s not moving, so hopefully they anchored it. Howling wind and rough seas.

According to Vessel Finder, the status of the boat is 'anchored' so hopefully they got it worked out. A very large swell is filling in right now which I'm guessing isn't helping.

Playing the National Park version of Monopoly tonight (which is really fun) and we noticed that Point Reyes didn’t make the cut as one of the properties. It is a Community Chest card however.

The sirens were for a bad car accident in the park that may have required extraction.

In a surprise decision today, the Coastal Commission announced it had approved a local wind turbine project in Tomales Bay in Inverness just behind the Inverness Store. The wind turbines will be placed there in June supplying up to 4 million KWh per year. While some of this power will be put into the local energy grid, most of it will power a Bitcoin mining farm being set up in some of the unused space in the Inverness Store by the Bitcoin mining company, Riot Blockchain. (Bitcoin mining is an energy-intensive process with customized mining systems that compete to solve mathematical puzzles. The miner who solves the puzzle first is rewarded with bitcoin.)

In a statement by Riot Blockchain, they said "we are excited to start this new relationship with West Mare" and wanted to reach out to the local community by offering a discount on buying cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, $Cats, Nyancoin, Coinye and Dogecoin. Locals will also be allowed to purchase beverages from the Inverness Store's incredible beverage section using Bitcoin. WMF is very excited about this new project and will be releasing its own crytpocurrency called the BurtonCoin which can only be redeemed if Burton ever shaves his beard.

This is happening tonight starting at 8:45pm in Point Reyes Station. Meet at the Third & C Street entrance to the wetlands.

WMF did it last month and can't recommend it enough, it will change the way you look at the night sky.

STARGAZING WITH DON JOLLEY
Each month, in concert with the Point Reyes National Seashore, the Point Reyes Station Village Association (PointReyesStaion.org) presents a benefit to support its work* to preserve the coastal nightscape. Join astronomy teacher and storyteller extraordinaire Don Jolley under the stars at the Giacomini Wetland to learn the names of planets, stars, constellations and hear spellbinding stories about billions and billions of celestial bodies.

Because local skies are often foggy, we’ll notify participants on the evening of the first clear night before the New Moon each month, and meet at the Third & C Street entrance to the wetlands to walk out toward the barn. (We sit partway up the path to the barn.)

Location: Giacomini Wetlands, Third & C Street, PRS (actual site is on the trail to the barn)
Donation $10-$20. Please bring exact change as it will be dark.
Important: Please be sure we have your private email and phone number so we may contact you on the night of the event.

Flashlight preparation: A headlamp with a red bulb option will work just fine. Or, modify an ordinary flashlight to be red-filtered: Cover the flashlight's lens with masking tape, and color the tape with a red marker, like a Sharpie or red crayon. It may take a few layers of tape and marker to get the light to quiet down. You'll want enough light to read your star chart in the dark, but not so much that it blinds your vision of the stars.

Here is a photo from the structure fire in Olema on Saturday night at a house just south of the Vedanta Retreat on Rt 1. We drove by in the morning and the structure was burned to the ground. Thank you to the first responders, our hearts go out to the owners of the house.

"CA State Parks is saddened to inform the public that the iconic Pioneer Tree at Samuel P. Taylor State Park is no longer standing. The tree was fully engulfed in flames earlier this morning. The Pioneer Tree and Cross Marin Trails are temporarily closed until further notice. Public advised to stay clear of area. The rest of the park remains open.

Via Marin County Fire “Crews responded to a vegetation fire that started at 11:30am today at Samuel P. Taylor State Park, on Pioneer Tree Trail. A large Redwood tree, approx. 8 ft in diameter, burned and fell, creating a 100’ x 40’ burn area. This required extensive mop up with large resource commitment. 3 engines and 1 hand crew will remain on scene until 2000 hours tonight (8:00PM). Cause is under investigation.”
